Job Description

Senior Metabolic Engineer:

Synlogic is a leading biotechnology/synthetic biology company located in Cambridge, MA that is focused on the development of novel therapeutic microorganisms for the treatment of important human diseases, including inborn errors of metabolism. We are currently seeking a motivated individual with experience in metabolic engineering in microbial systems to join our research team by contributing to the design, construction and evaluation of our engineered therapeutic organisms. The successful candidate will guide our existing team of strain engineers and serve as a resource to the discovery organization as a whole. This role represents a unique opportunity to guide the evolution of our innovative platform to new levels of therapeutic effectiveness by building on internal and external knowledge. The ideal candidate should be passionate about innovation, have cutting edge experience in microbial engineering technologies including metabolic modeling and flux analyses, and have proven experience leading diverse scientific teams.

Duties and Responsibilities

To contribute effectively in this role, the successful applicant will be expected to be proficient or have experience in:

  • metabolic engineering and bacterial strain development
  • microbial metabolism as related to industrial biotechnology
  • flux balance analysis
  • thermodynamic/kinetic analysis
  • systems biology and related analytical methodologies including transcriptomics
  • assay development
  • strain optimization methodologies including directed evolution and design of selections and screens

Qualifications & Experiences

Required Qualifications & Experiences: The following qualifications and experiences are required for the position:

  • PhD in chemical or biological engineering or an aligned discipline with 10+ years experience in an industrial biological engineering setting
  • Knowledge of diverse microbial engineering systems
  • Familiarity with diverse engineering contexts including anaerobiosis
  • Collaborative experience with scale-up and manufacturing organizations
  • Significant team leadership skills including teaching and knowledge sharing
  • Proven ability to coordinate team efforts towards aggressive goal delivery
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, cross-functional environment
  • Experience presenting working with and presenting to senior leaders, critical stakeholders and external audiences

Other Requirements

  • Occasional travel required.
