Job Description

Synlogic is a leading biotechnology/synthetic biology company located in Cambridge, MA that is focused on the development of novel therapeutic microorganisms for the treatment of important human diseases, including inborn errors of metabolism.

We are currently seeking a motivated individual with experience in genomics or bioinformatics for an 8-10 week internship to contribute to our Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) software pipeline development and strain characterization efforts. This role will focus on developing validated software pipelines to automate metagenomic and transcriptomic data analysis and visualization and to enable characterization of microbial communities and engineered strain transcriptional profiles. The ideal candidate should have experience in NGS data processing, analysis, and visualization, as well as software development and validation. This role represents a unique opportunity to meaningfully advance understanding of engineered bacterial strain physiology and activity in an industrial research setting.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Implement and validate NGS data processing and visualization software pipelines.
  • Characterize metagenomic signatures of treatment with therapeutic microorganisms.
  • Analyze differentially expressed bacterial genes/pathways in simulated GI models.
  • Generate data reports, rigorously maintain an electronic laboratory notebook, and accurately present data to project teams.

Job Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program in Genomics, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with software development and NGS data analysis.
  • Fluency with Python and related statistical and data visualization software packages preferred.
  • Experience with multivariate analysis techniques a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy and an ability to work independently to solve technical problems.
  • Highly organized with excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Effective management of time and effort to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, cross-functional environment.
