Job Description

The Analytical Development Scientist will be responsible for the microbiological method development to support the process development of drug substance and drug product at Synlogic. The scientist will be part of a dynamic and motivated Development team to bring Synlogic’s novel Synthetic Biotic medicines to clinical trials and eventual commercialization.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop a strategy for clinical phase-specific microbiological testing of drug substance and drug product to support
  • Synlogic’s live biotherapeutic products (LBPs).
  • Develop microbiological assays to support clinical product lot release and characterization.
  • Manage a group to support high-throughput microbiological testing of internal process and formulation development test samples and implement assay automation as needed.
  • Lead the microbiological sciences within the development function to better understand and characterize the microbiological quality of Synlogic’s LBPs. This includes developing correlations to process variables and recommending improved process control strategies as appropriate.
  • Develop clinical phase-specific assay (pre-) qualification data packages to support assay tech transfer to external labs and
  • CMOs for GMP product lot release and characterization.
  • Write and review development technical protocols and reports documenting analytical method development studies as required for internal documentation.
  • Support regulatory filings thorough generation of required analytical sections
  • Work collaboratively with the Research Analytical Group to develop assays that are suitable for transfer to the
  • Development Analytical Group.
  • Represent analytical development and work collaboratively in cross-functional development teams. Concisely communicate assay development project objectives, advances, challenges and timelines to project teams.

Job Requirements

  • Ph.D. in microbiology, biochemistry or related discipline with at least 5 years of experience within a Development or QC microbiology lab at a biotech, pharmaceutical or contract testing lab
  • Experience with microbiology assays such as CFU and bioburden assays (USP<61>, USP<62> and USP<1111>)
  • Experience with flow cytometry and other assay methods for enumeration and quality determination of microbial cells

Preferred Qualifications & Experiences: The following qualifications and experiences are preferred:

  • Experience with assays for LBPs or probiotics
  • Automation of assays using liquid handling stations for high-throughput use in R&D
  • Molecular & cellular biology assays such as qPCR/PCR and proteomics
  • Analytical development on biologics such as U/HPLC, CE, gel-based assays
  • Solid dose assays for drug substance and drug product lot release and characterization

Other Requirements

  • Travel to CMOs for tech transfer of assays is expected to be required
