Job Description

Bioinformatician/Computational Biologist

Synlogic is a leading biotechnology/synthetic biology company located in Cambridge, MA that is focused on the development of novel therapeutic microorganisms for the treatment of important human diseases, including inborn errors of metabolism. We are currently seeking a motivated individual with experience in genomics and bioinformatics for a position with our Microbial Engineering and Discovery Science team to contribute to our Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) software pipeline development and strain characterization efforts.

The successful candidate will lead the application of ‘omics technologies to advance Synlogic’s therapeutic development programs and effectively communicate computational approaches to key stakeholders across the organization. The candidate will develop and validate software pipelines to automate transcriptomic data analysis and visualization to enable characterization of engineered strain functional profiles.

In addition, this role will develop strategies to combine NGS and metabolomics datasets to anticipate strain activity in simulated gastrointestinal tract (GI) and animal models. The ideal candidate should have experience in NGS data processing, multivariate analysis techniques, and data visualization, as well as software development and validation. This role represents a unique opportunity to meaningfully advance our understanding of engineered bacterial strain physiology and activity in the host environment.



  • MS with 3+ years experience or PhD in Genomics, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated experience with bioinformatics software development and NGS data analysis.
  • Deep understanding of statistical methods for interpreting ‘omics datasets.
  • Fluency with Linux, Bash, Python, and related statistical and data visualization software packages.
  • Experience with transcriptomic datasets (RNAseq).
  • Experience with multivariate analysis techniques.
  • Experience with cloud computing solutions preferred.
  • Experience constructing relational databases a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy and an ability to work independently to solve technical problems.
  • Highly organized with excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Effective management of time and effort to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, cross-functional environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Laboratory Leadership

  • Develop and rigorously validate NGS data processing and visualization software pipelines.
  • Identify differentially expressed bacterial genes/pathways in simulated GI models.
  • Implement data storage, documentation, and quality protocols in collaboration with Synlogic’s IT staff.
  • Generate data reports, rigorously maintain an electronic laboratory notebook, and accurately present data to project teams.
